getting defective tapes from NLS

It happened again! I got to the end of side 8 of a book, put in the next tape to finish the book which was supposed to end on side 9, and there was something wrong with that tape. Obviously staff at the Cleveland library don't evern open containers to make sure nothing is wrong with any of the tapes. This happens a few times a year. I also have gotten containers where the wrong tapes are in the container -- maybe one or two tapes from the book that is supposed to be there and a tape from another book. The really frustrating thing is that sometimes another patron has taken the time to write a note to let the library staff know what the problem is and put it in the container. So then I get the book and know right away that there is a problem because there is a note inside the container that no one at the library saw.

Here is what I do. I take a marker and draw a big X on the address card right above the little hole. Then I write on a 3X5 index card what the problem and slip it behind the address card on the outside of the container. Then I follow up with a phone call to the library explaining the problem and asking for a replacement of that book.

really? I've never had that problem. The only defective tape I got was the adverticement and explanations of the library! the man's voice was sounding well, but in the background there were some reversed-cut voices. I say this referring that in the background was like if someone else was reading another book, but some words were not spoken. But it I am really surprised about that service. I thought they were looking every single book they receive from other people

ah! another thing I receive are incomplete books. For example I one day received a book number 9, but where are the other tapes?

I've had this problem with the CNIB up here in Canada on occasion. Some time ago, they began asking us to tear OFF the corner of the mailing card with a hole in it, presumably to make it obvious as to which tapes needed to be checked more carefully.

They don't have you doing something similar?

Yes, but people at the library where I return my tapes must not pay attention. I have to do something very, very obvious like write a note and put it right behind the address card so they can't miss it.

I had a tape which I kept returning because they were sending me defective ones, but finally I got the book and it wasn't defective. Now wanna know what's amusing? RFB and D! Their people reading their tapes like to do their bodily functions without stopping or pausing the recording. It was annoying but amusing at the same time.

Yeah, there's nothing like hearing the reader rip a big one in the middle of a borring history textbook. LOL. I can't wait until it all goes digital so they can just start sending people cd's instead of this tape crap. It'll be a hard transition for some, but change is sometimes unplesent in the beginning, but once the change is gotten used to, I'm sure even the older crowd will apreciate it.

if somethings wrong with your book, they say put a rubber band around the case. This usually works for us! smile- angel

Oops!!! Um!!!, I think I'm one of those annoying people who break the tapes and record over them. hehehehe I tend to listen to the book over and over again, especially the Harry potter books, and accidentally break the tape. However, I do send it back, um, but hmmm; I think I might have forgotten to put the rubber band on. Again, oops!!! Well, back when I was living with my parents, my room used to be very messy and my library tapes were everywhere. Sometimes, the cases weren't labeled in Braille so I would just stuff a tape in the container hoping that it was the right container. I hope I got it right!!! As for recording over the book, I admit that I am guilty of that crime. But I only recorded over a tape which contained a book that I thought was horrible!!! But I don't think I ever sent any of my recordings back to the library. I considered it, but never did!!! Well, I hope you all aren't too angry with me after I confessed to these transgressions. But please remember that I did not mean to inconvenience any of you and it is, I believe, partly the library’s fault for not checking the tapes.

Lol! hisenthusiasticlova, I don't think you really need to appologize. It's totally fine.

Yeah, C.d.s aren't that great either. They can get scratched. I have gone to the public library and have that happen, so c.d.s aren't so great either.

Um, for messed up tapes, I had a couple of those, and I just did either the masking tape or rubber band.

Oh damn there is nothing worse then getting near the end of a book then finding out that a tape is broken or not even there. I try to check first to see if all tapes are at least there. The worse use to be those flexible disks. man that was the dummist idea ever. big creases down the center of a record and scratches.

My textbooks are from the RFB&D, and I've never heard someone burp or fart midsentence. Hahahhahaha! Although, that would break the monotony of the material nicely. lol

actually the cd's from rfb and d are much nicer and u get some really good readers. when i had the material on tape however, there was this one instance where the lady's friend walks in the room and gives something to her. she laughs and says thank you and then continues reading. there was another instance where this old lady constantly cleared her throat and sniffled. then she started coughing alot and took her inhaler.

Lol! Yes, you do get tapes from RFB and D like that, it's amusing.
Here's a trick though to the accidental record thing. Take a sharp object like a pen or a pencal. On each end of a casette tape there's a little whole, these wholes have little tabs in them which you can punch out and won't allow the record button to be depressed.
